Fountain Art Fair 2014

Urban Folk Art® Gallery will have a booth at the renowned Fountain Art Fair this weekend. Mainly works by founders Adam Suerte and Jason Mitchell, It will also have work by UFA® pals and Graffiti legends Mark Bode, Keo Xmen, Dr. Revolt, Trike One, and Veefer. It opens Friday from 5pm – 11pm at the 69th regiment Armory at 68 Lexington ave (@ 24-25th street) and is open Sat from 12pm-7pm    and Sunday from 12-5pm. 3rd Anniversary Art show Featuring UFA® Founders Adam Suerte and Jason Mitchell

The Urban Folk Art® Gallery's 3rd Anniversary was in January. It's been a great 3 years bringing undiscovered, emerging, and established artists into the public's view (check out the studio's galleries on the facebook page to see all of the great shows we've put on). To celebrate (as we have been the last 3 years) we opened an artshow featuring the current works of 2 of the Urban Folk Art® Studio's founding members, Adam Suerte and Jason Mitchell. It was great to see everyone who came out, and the new work that Jason and Suerte have been doing. The work will be up through Feb, and is a great preview to the gallery's debut at the Fountain Art Fair coming up in March. More on that later. It was a great Opening night. Lots of old friends and new came out, another night of legends. UFA® Old friend Fly is having a release party for her 8th issue of he PEOPs zine.

This Friday Perception: Through the Lens

This Friday we have a great photography exhibit by 4 local artists. It's all up and looks great, come check it out!

PERCEPTION: THROUGH THE LENS

The moments that are captured through the visual art of photography.

 Capturing emotion, a moment, or a place in time is what photographers do everyday.The art of photography is a way of telling a story without saying a single word. Whether it being portrait, landscape, fine art or the many other types of photography it all comes down to what the photographer captures through his or her lens that transports us into that moment.

 The Urban Folk Art© gallery has brought together 4 local photographers, Alex Bershaw who started his creative journey while traveling the world with the US Navy, Jorge Camacho, Anthony Jehamy who grew up expressing themselves through street art and making the transition to photography, and Joe Russo who works as a professional entertainment photographer as well as an avid street art documentarian, to exhibit their works. The opening reception will be on Friday, September 7^th, 2012 from 7:00pm to 10:00pm and will remain on display until the 5^th of Oct. Urban Folk Art® gallery is located at 101 Smith Street in Brooklyn, New York.

Founded in '91 by Adam Suerte. Urban Folk Art® Studio/Gallery is an artist collective/Gallery based out of South Brooklyn working in many mediums, avenues, and aspects of creating art. The collective is a mutually supportive effort to expose artists of many disciplines and levels of experience including undiscovered, emerging, and established. 

Photographers Bio's

 Alex Bershaw

Alex Bershaw's skyline panoramas unleash provocative aspects of city landmarks. His portraits and street photos evoke movie stills, frames of a story that came before and continues on. Looking at Alex Bershaw’s work, the viewer is treated to a hint of the long shadow cast by fleeting moments, a glimpse of the unexpected. Tapped into the living and breathing subculture that informs each scene, one wonders not so much what’s in these images as what’s behind them.

 Jorge Camacho

Jorge Camacho's journey to photographer starts with a raw energy that is subtle in appearance yet inviting in nature , his photographs not only draw you in but leave you inspired long after. A Brooklyn native who grew up with the influence of urban art and it's various forms, now takes his place behind the lens, not only to capture moments, but to release creativity.

 Anthony Jehamy (Guest Curator)

Anthony Jehamy grew up satisfying his hunger for creativity through urban art. Where he once only used a spray can and brush to express himself, this Brooklyn native has now added a camera to his creative arsenal. With an eye for detail and a passion for the fine art of photography, Anthony's photo's capture his perception of the world around him.

 Joe Russo

Joe Russo is a Brooklyn-born photographer. Most of his career behind the lens has been focused on music and people. Through his photos, he tries to capture the raw emotion of his subjects while he seizes each moment.

“Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn.”

Brooklynites have a pride that is unmatched, and while the borough has gone through many changes as of late, one thing holds true, Brooklynites from the ’70s and ’80s have style, and we know it. This style was exhibited in many ways, from the way we dressed, walked (with a knowing swagger), talked (despite mythology, there’s more than just one Brooklyn accent), made a stoop our own, or how we wrote on subway trains, walls, and later, canvasses.

While street-art is often referred to as a worldwide movement — and it truly has has become one, co-opted by small commercial interests and big business alike — the art-form got its humble, ink-stained start in the five boroughs of New York City, kicked-off by city-kids for city-kids. The County Of Kings can lay claim to breeding and nurturing many a talented and acclaimed urban artist, hailing from places as diverse as Red Hook, Coney Island, Park Slope, and Bedford Stuyvesant.

The BROOKLYN YES INDEED show intends to highlight an art movement and subculture that has grown leaps and bounds from its insular D.I.Y. origins, by showcasing artwork that shows the trajectory of a clutch of legendary Brooklyn artists who have taken their work from the trains and walls of our great city onto the next level. In addition to canvas and sculpture work, the exhibit includes photography in an effort to give a context as to where the art was birthed, and by whom.

Brooklyn Bridge show/tattoo day were awesome

We had a great time at the Brooklyn Bridge 129th anniversary group art show opening, and then had a blast the sunday after where a good 30-40 people came out to get their $29 Brooklyn Bridge Tattoos.
The work in the art show was an amazing mixture of backgrounds and mediums. For a full rundown of the work, prices for whats still available, and more shots of the opening, check here. The show will be up until the last week of June, so come down and check it out!
