Brooklyn Bridge 130th Anniversary Group Art Show

Urban Folk Art® Gallery will be honoring the 130^th anniversary of the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge with a group show of over 30 local artists of varying mediums. In their fourth show of this type, artists will be showing their homages to the bridge with one common element. In February 2013, curator and contributing artist Adam Suerte acquired five 5 gallon buckets of surplus paint from the NY Department of Transit that was used to do touch ups on the Brooklyn Bridge (http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/02/05/surplus-paint-from-the-brooklyn-bridge-now-could-be-yours/). Each artist in the group show will be using the

“Chocolate Brown Enamel” in some way within their piece. Painters, comic artists, graphic designers, photographers, screen printers, tattooers, graffiti artists, toy designers and artists of other mediums will be contributing. Suerte, as one of his pieces has repackaged some of this paint in a limited edition quart size cans that will be for sale at the show. If you ever wanted to own a piece of the bridge, this could be considered pretty close.

The show opens May 24^th from 7-10 and will remain up until the end of June.

Nu Hotel Perpectives project opening/artshow

UFA® founder Adam Suerte was fortunate to take part in downtown Brooklyn's 'Nu Perspectives' project where local artists were invited to paint some of the guest rooms. Here's a time-lapse of Adam painting his room filmed by Jason Shaltz.  This thursday, Feb 21st will be the opening of this project and all are invited. Read below, and be sure to rsvp if you'd like to come check it out. On thursday from 6-7, join UFA® founder's Adam and Jason $#!+#3@D Mitchell at the gallery for a reception of their current UFA® 2nd anniversary show, the head over to the Nu Hotel from 7-9 to check out the local artist painted rooms, and have a drink on the NU.

NU Hotel Brooklyn and its neighborhood partners are  hosting an art opening, where friends and neighbors of the hotel are invited to tour the rooms and meet the artists, on February 21.

(Brooklyn, N.Y. – February 7, 2013) Local artists have invaded NU Hotel Brooklyn with their creative touch, literally, transforming four of the hotel’s 93 rooms with floor-to-ceiling murals as part of the NU Perspectives project. To celebrate their completed works of art,  NU Hotel is hosting a NU Perspectives art opening on February 21, 2013 with neighborhood partners Urban Folk Art, Brooklyn Republic Vodka and Bar Tabac. 

The evening festivities kick off at 6 p.m. with a gallery reception at Urban Folk Art/ Brooklyn Tattoo, an art gallery and tattoo shop, located down the street from the hotel. The gallery is co-owned and co-operated by one of the NU Perspectives Artists, Adam Suerte. Immediately following,  guests are invited for an art opening and open house from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. at NU Hotel on the corner of Smith Street and Atlantic Avenue in Downtown Brooklyn.  NU Perspectives artists will be in attendance to discuss their art and creative process for the duration of the event.  Misdemeanor, NU Hotel’s lobby bar and lounge, will host the reception featuring light bites and Brooklyn Republic Vodka. Complimentary vodka  will be provided by liquor sponsor Republic Vodka from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“The NU Perspecives project epitomizes NU Hotel’s dedication to art and the community,” said Javier Egipciaco, NU Hotel Brooklyn’s general manager. “The NU Perspectives guestrooms have already gotten a great response with our guests – now it’s time to showcase them to the larger community with an event that travels around the neighborhood with NU hotel at its core.”

Bar Tabac, Smith Street French restaurant and NU Hotel neighbor and partner, invites NU Perspectives party attendees to join them for an after party featuring live music from 9 p.m.  Attendees will receive a complimentary glass of champagne with the purchase of a dinner entrée.

Brooklyn Tattoo® Urban Folk Art® Holiday party staff art show

This Saturday, Dec8th  from 7-11pm is our annual holiday party, and first time staff art show. 

We'll be showcasing artists who work at Brooklyn Tattoo® and Urban Folk Art® Studios.
There will be a raffle for anything from original art to Tattoo gift certificates, and shop merch. All proceeds from this raffle are going to our friends and neighbors down in Red Hook whose businesses were affected by Hurricane Sandy. We will hand over all proceeds to restoreredhook.org (or feel to contribute directly to them HERE).

It's Alive 2 show Oct 19th: Mark Bode, Dr.Revolt and Stan 153!

Next fri Oct 19th 7-10 will Mark the return of the It's Alive show (It's Alive 2'). 

Mark Bode, Dr. Revolt, and Stan 153 will fill the gallery with new works. The first show was legendary. The show will also be the release party for a never published Miami Mice comic by Mark Bode (published by Urban Folk Art® Studios), as well as the release of the new Miami Mice puzzle from Tools of The Trade (ttotglobal.com). There will also be silkscreen prints signed by all the artists from the first show and new prints for the second show.

Urban Folk Art® Studios and Brooklyn Tattoo® is proud to re- present the work of Mark Bode, Dr.Revolt, and Stan 153. The first ‘It’s Alive ‘ Show in March of 2010 was the 2^nd gallery opening UFA studios presented, and has stood as the most well received. The show will include new works from Dr. Revolt, Mark Bode, Stan 153 and Jean 13.  Lets recap if anyone hasn’t been doing their graffiti history homework, Dr Revolt is one of the founding members of The Rolling Thunder Writers (RTW) and is infamous for taking over the 1 subway line with his signature graffiti  style (and creator of the ‘Yo MTV Raps’ logo). Stan 153, who got his start on the corner of 153rd Street and Eight Avenue defined the landscape of Harlem in the dawn of graffiti history, the 1970’s. He has been documented in The Faith of  Graffiti by Norman Mailer.. Mark Bode, son of the legendary comic book artist, Vaughn Bode, has developed a worldwide following for taking his family legacy and applying it to the comic and tattoo worlds, and has currently been showing art, painting murals (tributes to his own and his father’s notorious comic characters such as Cheech Wizard), and keeping his bloodline’s legacy alive worldwide.

This Friday Perception: Through the Lens

This Friday we have a great photography exhibit by 4 local artists. It's all up and looks great, come check it out!

PERCEPTION: THROUGH THE LENS

The moments that are captured through the visual art of photography.

 Capturing emotion, a moment, or a place in time is what photographers do everyday.The art of photography is a way of telling a story without saying a single word. Whether it being portrait, landscape, fine art or the many other types of photography it all comes down to what the photographer captures through his or her lens that transports us into that moment.

 The Urban Folk Art© gallery has brought together 4 local photographers, Alex Bershaw who started his creative journey while traveling the world with the US Navy, Jorge Camacho, Anthony Jehamy who grew up expressing themselves through street art and making the transition to photography, and Joe Russo who works as a professional entertainment photographer as well as an avid street art documentarian, to exhibit their works. The opening reception will be on Friday, September 7^th, 2012 from 7:00pm to 10:00pm and will remain on display until the 5^th of Oct. Urban Folk Art® gallery is located at 101 Smith Street in Brooklyn, New York.

Founded in '91 by Adam Suerte. Urban Folk Art® Studio/Gallery is an artist collective/Gallery based out of South Brooklyn working in many mediums, avenues, and aspects of creating art. The collective is a mutually supportive effort to expose artists of many disciplines and levels of experience including undiscovered, emerging, and established.

 Alex Bershaw

Alex Bershaw's skyline panoramas unleash provocative aspects of city landmarks. His portraits and street photos evoke movie stills, frames of a story that came before and continues on. Looking at Alex Bershaw’s work, the viewer is treated to a hint of the long shadow cast by fleeting moments, a glimpse of the unexpected. Tapped into the living and breathing subculture that informs each scene, one wonders not so much what’s in these images as what’s behind them.

 Jorge Camacho

Jorge Camacho's journey to photographer starts with a raw energy that is subtle in appearance yet inviting in nature , his photographs not only draw you in but leave you inspired long after. A Brooklyn native who grew up with the influence of urban art and it's various forms, now takes his place behind the lens, not only to capture moments, but to release creativity.

 Anthony Jehamy (Guest Curator)

Anthony Jehamy grew up satisfying his hunger for creativity through urban art. Where he once only used a spray can and brush to express himself, this Brooklyn native has now added a camera to his creative arsenal. With an eye for detail and a passion for the fine art of photography, Anthony's photo's capture his perception of the world around him.

 Joe Russo

Joe Russo is a Brooklyn-born photographer. Most of his career behind the lens has been focused on music and people. Through his photos, he tries to capture the raw emotion of his subjects while he seizes each moment.

"The Urban Folk Art® Gallery will be presenting photographs by Chris Arnade on March 9, 2012. Arnade’s work examines the lives of people living in the neglected areas of New York’s outer boroughs. His photos show street survivors—prostitutes, addicts, the homeless—as well as people who find their niche through shared obsessions such as pigeon keeping and bicycle clubs.

Not simply visual documents, the pictures are accompanied by stories told to Arnade by the subjects themselves. Prostitutes are shown in full as people with incredible histories of loss and suffering. The homeless are not anonymous....

A counterpoint to the portraits, the exhibition also presents Arnade’s series on pigeons, which rise above the scene on the street. These photographs depict an elaborate subculture of men devoted to raising pigeons for sport. The exhibit highlights the structures pigeon-keepers have built on rooftops, enclaves of care and beauty within the harsher urban landscape."

Happy New Year, 1st anniversary of the Gallery celebration!

Happy new year everyone! It's been a little nuts over here, but just as we are getting ready to dismantle the Martha Cooper/Aiko Show, we are getting ready for the 1st anniversary celebration of the gallery with a show by the head curator/ artist Adam Suerte. It was a great year filled with meeting and showing some awesome artists, and we are happy to mark it with the collected works of one of our own. Check out his website for a glimpse of what may lay in store and spread the word!
